The hills surrounding Feriland sit at the meeting point of the Zarand Mountains and the Arad Plateau — a landscape of rolling vineyards, dense beech forests, and open ridgelines with views stretching to the Hungarian border. For cyclists and hikers, this is one of western Romania's best-kept secrets: a network of trails ranging from gentle vineyard circuits to challenging mountain routes, all within minutes of your doorstep.
Ghioroc — Vârful Capra — Cladova
The most celebrated route in the area is the Ghioroc to Cladova trail via Vârful Capra (Capra Peak). This 7.1 km point-to-point path climbs 321 meters through mixed forest and along exposed ridgelines, offering panoramic views of the Mureș valley and the distant plains. Rated 4.9 stars on AllTrails with 16 reviews, it takes approximately 2 hours and 19 minutes to complete and passes the Ciuperca Monument, a local landmark perched on a rocky outcrop. The trail is classified as hard difficulty, but the effort is rewarded with some of the most dramatic scenery in Arad County. Start early in the morning to catch the mist lifting from the valley below.
The Playground Zarand Circuit
For more ambitious cyclists, the Playground Zarand route is a 36.7 km mountain circuit that follows the ridgeline (traseu de creasta) of the Zarand foothills. The route begins with a sustained climb via Valea Cladovei, then links a series of peaks — Vf. Capra, Vf. Fântâna Rece, Vf. Cârciumă, and Vf. Chicicara — before descending back to the starting point. The terrain breakdown is 65% track, 24% path, and 5% road, with the remainder on forest trails. It's a moderate-difficulty ride that rewards strong legs with uninterrupted forest canopy, wildflower meadows, and not a single traffic light.
Plan Your Adventure
The best riding season runs from April through October, with spring offering wildflowers and cooler temperatures and autumn delivering golden vineyard landscapes and ideal riding conditions. We provide printed trail maps and downloadable GPS routes at the villa, and can arrange guided tours with local experts who know every hidden viewpoint and shortcut. For trail runners, the area hosts organized events including the Ghioroc Marathon (42.9 km, 932 m elevation gain) and the Ghioroc Half (22.9 km, 1,242 m elevation gain) — challenging races through some of the most beautiful terrain in Transylvania.
Lace up your boots or pump your tires — the hills are calling, and the views from the top are worth every pedal stroke.
